For me May always brings summer, crazy busy schedules, and a renewed sense of things as a school year closes and new opportunities arise. This blog isn’t designed for light reading it is designed to challenge you. It is for you to do some reflecting about where you currently are and where you want to go. We know that thoughts determine what we want but actions determine what we get. I want to explain a reflection activity called “C”ubed.
It takes a look at what you want to Continue, Commence, and Conclude. This could be done with anyone from a player to a coach but for the purposes of this article and my main audience I am going to focus on the coach side, provide some guidance, and examples. Then the rest is up to you.
I want you to think about two different aspects of your life: coaching and home life and how “C”ubed pertains to them.
As a coach what is something that you do well, enjoy, or have success with and you would like to Continue?
As a coach what is something you have learned recently, have been wanting to implement, or noticed others doing that you would like to Commence?
Lastly, as a coach what is something you aren’t particularly happy with, isn’t going well, don’t like, or need to Conclude?
Brainstorm a list of things that could be potential candidates to each of the previous questions and then pick one thing for each category of “C”ubed. You most likely will have more than one thing you really like in each but I would advise only picking one to start with or you may find that you have taken on too much which coaches certainly have a tendency of doing.
I want you to continue this same process but also answer the same questions in the context of your home life as a Husband, Wife, fiancé (me until August!), Dad, Mom, neighbor, etc. Many coaches have a hard time with the season because of the hectic schedule and long hours. This is an activity that will hopefully make your family life easier on everyone at home.

After making 6 decisions write them down. Use this template to record your answers to the above questions. Color two of the squares green (Commence) for the things you are going to get going on. Color two other squares yellow (Continue) for the things you would like to proceed with as you currently are. And lastly color the remaining two squares red (Conclude) to represent the things you are committing to stop.
Cut out the cube, place it on your desk, in your bathroom, in the kitchen in your dugout, in your car. Just put it somewhere that you are going to be able to see daily from now until the end of the summer and COMMIT to your “C”ube.
